South Korea Says Kim Jong Un Appears to be Handling Affairs as Normal Despite Rumors of Poor Health Following Surgery

Unconfirmed rumors surfaced from South Korean media that the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un could be in poor health following surgery.

Not many details were given, but speculation often arises when the North Korean leader misses certain state events.  Kim missed the celebration of his late grandfather and state founder Kim Il Sung on April 15, the country’s most important holiday.

South Korea‘s presidential Blue House said Kim Jong Un appears to be handling state affairs as usual and there was no confirmed information about the rumors of Kim’s health.

According to Fox News, sources in South Korea, as well as an unnamed U.S. official, claimed to have information that Kim, in his mid-30s, may have undergone surgery that left him “incapacitated or worse.”  Conservative South Korean lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun, chairman of the National Assembly’s foreign affairs and unification committee, said he was told by unspecified non-government sources that Kim had surgery over cardiovascular problems.  Seoul’s National Intelligence Service could not confirm whether Kim had surgery.

U.S. intelligence officials are closely monitoring the situation.
