Travelers flying from Bakersfield to Dallas–Fort Worth will need to make alternate plans, as American Airlines will suspend the route from Feb. 11 through April 7.
Jared Salvo, a Bakersfield cardiologist, said he felt frustrated after learning on New Year’s Eve that his upcoming flights had been canceled.
“I was just disappointed because it seems kind of capricious that they would cancel the trip without any advance notice,” Salvo said.
As a result, Salvo spent an additional $1,500 to rebook his travel with United Airlines, the only other carrier operating out of Meadows Field.
American Airlines said the suspension is due to seasonal adjustments, explaining, “We are always evaluating demand and making adjustments as needed to support our customers and network.”
Bill LaManque, Kern County’s director of airports, acknowledged the inconvenience but expressed optimism about Meadows Field’s future, pointing to a 14% increase in passenger traffic last year.
Travel agent Ray Watson, president of Uniglobe Golden Empire Travel, stressed the importance of community support to attract more airlines. Meanwhile, Kathi Lowry, owner of L.E.G. Travel, suggested adding a flight to Las Vegas.
Shajar Khan, who recently traveled from Dallas, said he hopes the route resumes as scheduled, adding, “This flight was full also. I think there’s enough traffic.”
American Airlines flights between Bakersfield and Phoenix will continue without changes.
