A man died Wednesday morning following a high-speed rollover crash involving a Freightliner on Bear Mountain Boulevard and Wible Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said officers responded around 9:12 a.m. to reports of a collision at the intersection involving a Honda CRV and a semi-truck.
CHP investigators determined that an unidentified man was driving a 2011 blue Honda CRV southbound on Wible Road at a high rate of speed as he approached the stop sign at Bear Mountain Boulevard. At the same time, a 33-year-old man from Fresno was traveling westbound on Bear Mountain Boulevard in a Freightliner at approximately 55 miles per hour.
As the Freightliner continued west, the driver of the Honda failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection. The front of the Honda struck the right side of the Freightliner’s semi-trailer. The force of the impact caused both the semi-trailer and the Honda to overturn, coming to rest across the eastbound and westbound lanes of Bear Mountain Boulevard.
The driver of the Honda suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The Freightliner driver was not injured and is cooperating with law enforcement.
Authorities are withholding the identity of the man who was killed until next of kin are notified. The Kern County Coroner’s Office will release his name at a later time.
Investigators said it is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
