Mother Charged with Murdering 15-Month-Old in Santa Monica

Carmen Degregg, 24, was charged with murder after her 15-month-old daughter was found with fatal injuries in their apartment on the 2000 block of Broadway. The child was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Degregg was detained by UCLA campus police on Jan. 6 after allegedly admitting to harming her daughter. Investigators collected evidence from the apartment, and preliminary reports suggest a frying pan may have been involved, though the cause of death will be determined by the L.A. County Medical Examiner.

Neighbors reported hearing distressing noises from the apartment that morning.

On Jan. 8, Degregg was formally charged with one count of murder and one count of willful cruelty to a child resulting in great bodily injury or death. She faces up to 25 years to life if convicted and remains in custody on $2 million bail. Arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 9.
