Southern California Police Commander Dies During Training Assignment

The Oxnard Police Department is mourning the sudden loss of Commander Scott Aaron, who died during a training assignment in Orange County.

According to OPD, Commander Aaron was scheduled to complete a weeklong training course last Friday but failed to attend sessions on Thursday and Friday. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department conducted a welfare check at his hotel and found him deceased around 9:20 a.m. Friday. Officials said the cause of death has not been determined, though no foul play is suspected.

“It is not suspected that his passing will be attributed beyond natural causes,” officials added.

Commander Aaron had served with Oxnard police for over 21 years and was promoted to commander less than a year ago. His career included assignments as a patrol officer, sergeant, field training officer, range master, traffic officer, beat coordinator, family protection investigator and supervisor, Major Crimes sergeant, professional standards sergeant, and patrol watch commander.

Before joining OPD, Aaron served in the U.S. Marines with a Security Force Company in Yorktown, Virginia, and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines in Twentynine Palms. He began his law enforcement career in 1996 with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office in Virginia and returned to California in 2002, joining OPD on Nov. 20, 2004.

“Scott served our department and community with the utmost dedication, compassion, and professionalism. He was a very hard-working and talented officer – an example for others to follow,” said Oxnard Police Department Chief Jason Benites. “If we needed something handled, and handled with excellence, we called on Scott. He loved Oxnard, he was proud of his service, and he was a dedicated husband and father. He will be remembered fondly with love and respect.”

Commander Aaron is survived by his wife, daughter, son, mother, and grandson.
