LA County Arson Detectives Investigate Suspicious Device Near 605 Freeway in El Monte

Los Angeles County arson detectives are investigating a suspicious device discovered near the 605 Freeway in El Monte on Monday.

Deputies said they located a “possible destructive device” after pulling over a driver in a strip mall parking lot near the intersection of Garvey Avenue and Valley Boulevard, just south of the freeway, around 3 p.m.

Detectives requested assistance from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters reported that no medical transports were needed as of 4:30 p.m. Arson and Explosives Detail detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene.

El Monte police evacuated nearby businesses while the investigation continued and shut down the intersection to traffic.

SkyCal captured footage of a remote-controlled robot used by detectives to inspect the vehicle and the suspicious object, with the device seen removing several items from the car.

Deputies said the driver, who has not yet been identified, was arrested at the scene on unrelated charges.
