The California city of Lodi is vying for national recognition as “America’s Favorite Small Town,” a title that could attract more visitors and boost local business.
Born and raised in Lodi, Loretta Hans, a cheesemonger at Cheese Central, praised the city’s charm. “I just can’t say enough,” Hans said. “Lodi is a beautiful town. It still has that small-town feel, and I will always love it.”
Lodi is among more than 200 towns nationwide competing for the honor. The winning town will be featured in Parade magazine and host a special event.
“They will hold an America’s 250, 4th of July celebration in your community if you win,” said Wes Rhea, CEO of Visit Lodi. “We already have a great event at Lodi Lake—imagine how we could expand it for America’s 250. It’s about getting votes every day.”
Rhea said the recognition could benefit local businesses and the economy. “Visitors dine, shop, visit tasting rooms, and go to Lodi Lake. That brings real dollars into our community, supports jobs, and funds libraries, roads, and parks,” he explained.
Residents like Hans highlight Lodi’s friendly atmosphere. “Everybody knows everybody. You can’t walk down the street without a ‘Hi,’” she said. “It’s homey, comfortable. School Street here is just the most beautiful little downtown street. I can’t say enough—it’s home.”
Currently, Lodi ranks 7th among the more than 200 towns. Voters also have a chance to win $1,500 toward a trip or vacation. The winners will be announced on June 12.
