Petition Pushes for Appeal in Zack Scrivner Mental Health Diversion Case

Former Kern County Supervisor Zack Scrivner was granted mental health diversion on December 19, 2025, drawing widespread public attention and calls for accountability.

Scrivner, originally charged with three felony counts of alleged child abuse and two felony counts of alleged possession of assault weapons, was allowed to enter a court-approved treatment program instead of continuing through the traditional justice system. If he completes the program successfully, the charges could be dismissed.

The decision sparked criticism. Lauren Skidmore of the Open Door Network said, “We don’t feel like the decision was fair and we don’t feel like all the facts of the case are being considered.” Skidmore launched a petition to raise awareness, which has already gathered over 2,000 signatures.

Scrivner’s defense attorney, H.A. Sala, defended the ruling, stating, “It was the right decision that the judge made based on the facts and circumstances of the case.”

Lawmakers have also weighed in. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Sen. Shannon Grove, and Dr. Jasmeet Bains have called for accountability. Congressman Vince Fong emphasized, “Crimes involving the abuse of children should never be tolerated,” while Congressman David Valadao urged transparency and suggested the U.S. Department of Justice review the case to ensure justice is served.
