38-year-old inmate dies in custody at Southern California jail

A 38-year-old inmate died in custody following a medical emergency at a Southern California jail, authorities said Wednesday.

Corrections staff and jail medical personnel responded to a day room at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta after deputies reported the emergency Tuesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Responders provided medical aid and assisted paramedics, who transported the inmate, identified as Joel Rodriguez of Lake Elsinore, to Loma Linda University Medical Center. Rodriguez was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials did not provide details about Rodriguez’s health prior to the emergency or the circumstances of his death, but said there were “no signs of foul play at the scene.”

Rodriguez’s family has been notified, and the investigation is ongoing.
