Elkins, W.Va. — On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Michael Anthony Matthews, 35, of Baltimore, Maryland, was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Thomas S. Kleeh.
Matthews, who previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner detailed Matthews’ role in the distribution of fentanyl in the Northern District of West Virginia, particularly in the Moorefield and Petersburg areas.
According to court documents, Matthews was a major source of fentanyl, orchestrating the transportation of significant quantities from Baltimore to West Virginia.
As part of the investigation led by the Potomac Highlands Drug Task Force, law enforcement agents seized approximately 9,000 fentanyl pills, weighing over two kilograms.
This operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat the influx of illegal narcotics in the region.
