Bodycam Video Shows Police Shooting Man Holding Hostages in Miami Beach
Local 10 News got exclusive bodycam footage of a police shooting that happened last year at a Victoria’s Secret store in Miami Beach. The video shows a man named Darien Young holding a store employee and a young girl at knifepoint before police shot him.
On July 27, 2023, Miami Beach police were called to the store at 901 Lincoln Road around 5:30 p.m. Young, who had escaped from a correctional facility a week earlier and was reportedly shoplifting, was holding the victims with a knife.
In the video, Young gets more and more agitated while threatening the victims. He moved to a corner of the store and began counting, saying someone would die. The police officers asked him many times to drop the knife, assuring him he would be okay if he did.
Despite the officers’ attempts to calm him, Young kept threatening the hostages. Officer Corey Jackson then fired a single shot, killing Young and freeing the hostages. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office said that Jackson’s use of force was “legally justified.”
