College Football Star Andre Seldon Jr. Dies in Tragic Cliff-Diving Accident

A college football player set to join Utah State University this fall was found dead on Saturday in what officials believe was a cliff-diving accident.

Andre Seldon Jr., a cornerback who had recently transferred from New Mexico State University, was identified by the school. He had played for two seasons under Nate Dreiling, who is now Utah State’s interim head coach.

Dreiling expressed deep sadness over the loss, recalling Seldon as a great person and teammate. He extended his condolences to Seldon’s family.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office in Logan, Utah, reported that they received news of a possible drowning at Porcupine Dam on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses said a young man who dove into the reservoir from a cliff did not come back up.

Divers found Seldon’s body around 9 p.m., about seven hours after the initial report. The sheriff’s office confirmed he was a Utah State student-athlete but did not reveal his identity immediately.

The sheriff’s office believes this was a tragic accident, based on witness statements. They offered their condolences to Seldon’s family and friends.

The university is providing emotional support to students and staff in the athletics department.

Seldon began his college football career at the University of Michigan in 2020 before transferring to New Mexico State. He graduated from Belleville High School, where he played football and ran track. In 2022, he started 12 out of 13 games for New Mexico State and was fifth on the team in tackles.

Both New Mexico State and the University of Michigan paid tribute to Seldon on social media.
