Daneé Pinckney, an English teacher at Twinsburg High School, has been honored as the 2025 Ohio Teacher of the Year by the Ohio State Board of Education.
Pinckney, who was inspired by her mother’s career in education, sees this award as a chance to spotlight her fellow teachers who may not receive such recognition. She says, I am surrounded by amazing teachers.
Pinckney’s teaching style is known for its informal, engaging approach. She often encourages discussion and uses a stress ball to capture students’ attention. It’s like organized chaos, she says, enjoying the family feel of her classroom.
Her creation of a course titled Exploration of Black Voices in Literature has been particularly praised. This senior-level elective explores the contributions of Africans and African Americans to American culture. Students like Sheldon Logan appreciate how the course helps them connect with their cultural identity and fosters pride and understanding.
The State Board of Education recognized Pinckney for her efforts in promoting community service and civic engagement among her students. The announcement was made at a surprise assembly at Twinsburg High School.
Principal Emily Hunt praised Pinckney for her ability to build strong relationships with students and her willingness to innovate. We’re just very proud, Hunt said.
Pinckney, who was previously named Twinsburg City Schools Teacher of the Year and an Ohio regional district Teacher of the Year, now moves forward to the national selection process. A committee will review all state winners to choose finalists for the National Teacher of the Year award.
