Decade-Old Virginia Double Murder Mystery Solved with Arrest in North Carolina

A murder mystery in Virginia involving two Franklin County residents has been solved after more than a decade. On Friday, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Daniel Elwood Duncan, a North Carolina resident, in connection with the double homicide.

The 43-year-old faces two charges of murder and two charges for using or displaying a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities revealed that Duncan had been a person of interest since the investigation began.

The case involves the deaths of Vicky Purdy and Ricky Dodson, a couple who were involved in an on-and-off relationship. Purdy, 53, was reported missing on October 3, 2013. Her body was discovered three days later in a burned-out vehicle along Philpott Road, near the Henry County line. She had been shot in the head.

Two months later, on December 5, the body of 54-year-old Ricky Dodson was found in a wooded area on Johnson Hill Road, about a mile from where Purdy’s vehicle was located. Although both deaths have been ruled homicides, the cause of Dodson’s death has not been disclosed, and no motive for the killings has been provided by authorities.
