Detroit Block Party Shooting Leaves Two Dead, 18 Injured

Two people were killed and 18 others were injured in a mass shooting at a block party on Detroit’s east side early Sunday morning.

According to Detroit police, a gunman began firing at the party around 2:25 AM while people were gathered in the area. A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head at the scene, and a 21-year-old man died at a local hospital after being shot in the back.

The suspect, a 22-year-old man, was also shot in the leg during the incident and has been taken into custody. He is currently recovering in the hospital. It’s unclear whether the shooter was apprehended by law enforcement or another party attendee.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the suspect to the public.

In response to the shooting, Detroit police announced they would implement new guidelines for block parties. Details of these changes will be shared at a briefing with the police chief and mayor.

Mary Sheffield, Detroit City Council president, expressed deep sadness and frustration over the shooting. She highlighted the young age of the victims and emphasized the urgent need to address gun violence in Detroit and across the country.

“My heart and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones,” Sheffield stated in her message.
