SALT LAKE CITY — A tragic start to the week for families in Utah as a series of deadly crashes occurred from Northern to Southern Utah.
The latest crash, occurring just after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, involved a red pickup truck that appeared to hit black ice on I-15. The truck spun out of control, flipping several times, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old man at the scene. All southbound lanes were shut down as a result of the crash.
“We are at that time of year where anytime you get moisture on the road, you run the risk of having black ice,” said Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol. “Make sure you take that into consideration. Slow down when driving over bridges and structures, especially.”
Another deadly crash occurred Monday evening just after 6 p.m. in Cache County near Richmond, involving three trucks. Investigators believe the driver of one of the trucks, possibly fatigued, lost control and crossed the median, striking two other trucks. One man in the second truck was killed.
On Sunday afternoon, a fatal crash also occurred when a 33-year-old motorcycle rider collided with a Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy, who was responding to a call. The motorcyclist died at the scene. UHP is still investigating the cause of the crash, particularly with the involvement of the officer.
“We want to confirm all the details as we investigate,” said Lt. Roden.
The names of the victims from the weekend crashes have not been released as of the time of this report.
