Former Gov. Tom Vilsack Backs Lanon Baccam in Iowa s Heated Congressional Contest

Iowa Democrats are intensifying their support for Lanon Baccam in the competitive race for the 3rd Congressional District, hoping to secure his win in the final days before the November 5 election. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, along with State Representative Ako Abdul-Samad, rallied voters on Monday, underscoring the importance of high voter turnout, especially in rural areas that tend to lean Republican.

Vilsack praised Baccam’s dedication to public service, drawing on his military and state government experience, and urged voters not to be swayed by the latest polls, which currently show a tight race against incumbent Republican Rep. Zach Nunn.

Cook Political Report recently moved the race from leans Republican to a toss-up, adding to the urgency for Democrats to mobilize in both urban and rural communities.

At a Get Out the Vote event hosted by Abdul-Samad, House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst emphasized that Baccam’s potential victory would amplify local voices, particularly from communities that have traditionally had lower turnout.

Baccam reassured supporters of his commitment to serve all Iowans, vowing to address issues like healthcare access and public school support in rural areas.

With campaign ads and election calls ramping up, Baccam encouraged early voting as the best way to curb the volume of outreach and secure a decisive vote count. As Election Day approaches, Democrats are hopeful that the grassroots momentum will lead to a significant turnout, potentially tipping the district in their favor.
