A 5-year-old boy tragically passed away after being left in a hot car in Omaha, Nebraska, for about seven hours, authorities reported.
The boy was found unconscious outside a beauty salon where his foster mother works, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Omaha police.
He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead. The boy’s foster mother, Juanita Pinon, aged 40 and from Omaha, was arrested and charged with child abuse by neglect resulting in death, police announced on Thursday.
“The suspect did not provide a statement indicating whether it was accidental or intentional,” said police spokesperson Chris Gordon to ABC News.
Temperatures reached 89 degrees in Omaha on Wednesday. Sadly, at least 10 children have died in hot cars across the U.S. so far this year.
Since 1990, at least 1,094 children have lost their lives in hot cars.
