In light of recent threats and incidents involving election-related unrest in Washington and surrounding regions, Governor Jay Inslee has authorized a temporary activation of the Washington National Guard WANG for public safety support during the upcoming election week.
Starting on Monday, November 4, through early Thursday, November 7, National Guard members will be on standby to aid local law enforcement and the Washington State Patrol if needed.
This decision follows a nationwide alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about heightened risks to election infrastructure.
Concerns were further intensified after incendiary devices were recently used against ballot drop boxes in Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, potentially impacting hundreds of ballots.
Under the authority granted by RCW 38.08.040, Governor Inslee has directed the Adjutant General, Major General Gent Welsh, to oversee this precautionary measure, emphasizing the Guard’s readiness to support public safety and protect critical infrastructure as necessary.
This move also includes additional coordination with Washington’s Emergency Management System to ensure the state’s preparedness for any civil unrest related to the election.
