I-15 Closure Near Nevada-California Border: Semi-Truck Fire Causes Major Delays

Travelers on Interstate 15 near the Nevada-California border are stuck because the highway is closed in both directions. This happened after a semi-truck carrying lithium-ion batteries caught fire. The closure stretches from Afton Canyon to Basin roads, after the San Bernardino County Fire Department dealt with the blaze northbound at mile marker 113, between Barstow and Baker.

The fire started when the truck overturned, leaking fuel and oil. The lithium-ion batteries on board ignited, making it hard to put out the fire because these batteries need a lot of water to cool down. Heavy equipment was also needed due to the weight of the cargo, adding to the complexity of the situation.

Additionally, some digital maps have mistakenly directed drivers onto unsuitable dirt roads and trails, posing risks to vehicles. Fire officials have warned about these map errors to keep everyone safe and allow emergency services to handle the fire properly.

FOX5 Vegas reported that a HazMat team, more firefighters, and additional equipment were called in to manage the hazardous materials and prevent further danger. Travelers are advised to expect significant delays or find other routes. There’s no estimated time for when the highway will reopen.

With both directions blocked, authorities are working hard to clear the area and reopen the freeway. Travelers should seek alternative routes and keep up with the latest traffic updates.
