Illinois Sheriff’s Deputy Charged with Murder in Fatal Shooting of Black Woman

An Illinois sheriff’s deputy, Sean Grayson, has been charged with murder for the death of Sonya Massey, a Black woman. Grayson allegedly shot Massey in the face during a confrontation over a pot of water in her home. He also told his partner not to try to help her, according to authorities.

The incident happened in Springfield, Illinois, about 200 miles south of Chicago, on July 6, after deputies were called to Massey’s home about a possible intruder.

Prosecutors say Grayson yelled at Massey to put down the pot, and when she raised her hands and said she was sorry, he shot her. They also claim that Grayson discouraged his partner from using a medical kit to help Massey.

The other deputy tried to help Massey until medical help arrived. Grayson did not try to assist her at any point. A review of body camera footage showed that deadly force was not justified.

Grayson has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He is currently in custody, and his lawyer declined to comment. The sheriff has fired Grayson, saying he did not follow proper procedures.

Massey’s family and supporters are calling for justice. About 200 people gathered to support her and view body camera footage of the shooting. The video will be released with some images removed out of respect for Massey’s family.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey’s family, said the charges are an important step toward justice. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed anger over the case and thanked the State’s Attorney’s office for bringing charges. He hopes Massey’s memory will help push for a fair justice system.
