The Oklahoma Department of Corrections ODOC is actively working to improve conditions within its prisons while also ensuring inmates are prepared to reintegrate into society through its work release program.
This initiative allows inmates with less than 3,000 days left on their sentences to secure employment, providing them with a sense of value and opportunity.
Scott Nunn from the ODOC highlights the importance of resources for successful re-acclimation, stating that inmates are more likely to re-offend without support.
The program includes various services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, and job training.
Inmates participating in the work release program live at the facility, attending programs and working during the day.
Success stories include former inmates like Alvin Davis, who were able to save substantial amounts—often over $5,000, with some accumulating as much as $50,000—allowing them to start anew after release.
As the program grows, the ODOC seeks more community partnerships to expand job opportunities for inmates, embodying their mission to change lives.
