In Iowa’s upcoming general election, Democrats aim to challenge Republicans’ hold on all four congressional districts, especially in the 1st and 3rd districts, where the races are considered competitive.
In Iowa’s 1st District, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, a Republican, seeks her third term against Democrat Christina Bohannan, whom she defeated by seven points in 2022. Bohannan, a former state legislator and University of Iowa law professor, is emphasizing her support for abortion rights and affordable living costs. Miller-Meeks, who opposes abortion rights, has supported a national abortion ban after 15 weeks and focuses on reducing inflation and prescription drug prices.
The 3rd District race, covering central Iowa and much of the Des Moines area, pits incumbent Republican Rep. Zach Nunn against Democrat Lanon Baccam. Both candidates have military backgrounds, with Baccam serving in the Iowa National Guard and Nunn in the Air Force. Abortion remains a significant issue here, with Baccam advocating to restore national abortion rights, while Nunn, who opposes abortion rights, does not support a nationwide ban.
In the 2nd District, Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson seeks another term against Democrat Sarah Corkery, with Hinson emphasizing border security and Corkery focusing on restoring abortion rights. Independent Jody Puffett is also in the race.
In the 4th District, Rep. Randy Feenstra faces Democrat Ryan Melton. Republicans hold a strong voter advantage in this rural district, where general election victories are typically won by large margins.
