Judge s Strong Words as Tina Peters Receives Nine-Year Sentence for Election System Breach

Court administrators are currently evaluating threats received following the sentencing of Tina Peters, who was ordered by a district court judge in Grand Junction to serve nine years in prison for her involvement in a 2021 breach of her county’s election system.

On Thursday, Judge Matthew Barrett of the 21st Judicial District issued the sentence, stating that Peters had found a way to profit from falsehoods and that he believed she would continue her actions if not incarcerated.

We have been receiving threats as well as commendations concerning Judge Barrett’s sentencing of Tina Peters, said Will Sightler, the court executive for the 21st Judicial District, in a statement on Friday. We are reviewing these communications and will take appropriate action as needed.”

Additional details about the threats have not been disclosed, and the court will be closed on Monday in observance of Cabrini Day, a state holiday.

Tina Peters, 68, a former Mesa County Clerk and Recorder, was convicted in August on multiple charges, including attempting to influence a public official, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, official misconduct, violation of duty, and failing to comply with an order from the Secretary of State.

During sentencing, Barrett addressed Peters directly, saying, Your lies are well-documented, and these convictions are serious. I am convinced you would do it all over again. You are as defiant a defendant as this court has ever seen.

Although she did not testify during her trial, Peters pleaded for mercy in court, stating, Your honor, I don’t deserve to go to prison where others have committed heinous crimes. I am not a criminal. I have lived my life with faith and honesty.

The information that was taken from Mesa County’s voting system was never used to substantiate claims of election fraud, but it fueled national conspiracy theories, suggesting that Dominion Voting Systems was manipulating election outcomes.

Peters gained notoriety among election conspiracy theorists, both locally and nationally, earning titles like Hero Tina and Clerk Peters from her followers on social media. A documentary titled “Selection Code, which focused on her election breach, was released in 2022.

She has appeared at Mar-a-Lago with former President Donald Trump, participated in conferences alongside MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and other conspiracy advocates, and was a regular guest on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast prior to Bannon’s prison sentence for ignoring a congressional subpoena. Throughout her trial and sentencing, Peters made numerous appearances on right-wing podcasts, soliciting funds for her defense.
