Kamala Harris Leads in Poll for 2026 California Governor Race

The recent U.C. Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll suggests that if Vice President Kamala Harris were to run for California governor in 2026, she’d have a solid lead among potential contenders, despite not indicating plans to run.

With 46% of voters polled showing likely support for Harris and 42% likely opposed, Harris is emerging as a clear favorite, with a notable 12% still undecided. The poll, conducted during California’s presidential election, underscores her enduring popularity among California Democrats.

Democratic strategist Steven Maviglio views Harris as a strong candidate who could “clear the field” due to her national fundraising ability, established campaign experience, and California voter base. He notes that her experience in high-stakes campaigns, especially against Trump-aligned Republicans, would be advantageous.

On the other hand, Republican strategist Matt Shupe sees Harris as potentially aiding the GOP’s chances of retaking the governorship, calling her candidacy an opportunity for Republicans in a state that has not elected a GOP governor since 2006.

Shupe suggests that Democrats should look beyond Harris, implying that her candidacy might energize a Republican comeback.

Among the current pool of gubernatorial hopefuls, Democratic Rep. Katie Porter leads with 13% support, followed closely by Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco at 12%, illustrating a competitive landscape as candidates begin staking their claims.
