Kenya’s National Police announced on Monday that they arrested a 33-year-old man named Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, calling him a “psychopathic serial killer.” They said Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, who was his first victim.
Mohammed Amin, the head of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), stated that Khalusha’s killing spree started in 2022 and continued until just four days before his arrest.
Amin made this announcement during a news conference at DCI headquarters in Nairobi. The police had been tracking Khalusha through his cell phone signal. They said a mobile money transaction using a victim’s phone led them to Khalusha.
Khalusha was arrested early Monday outside a club where he was watching a soccer game. He confessed to luring, killing, and disposing of 42 women, including his wife and a woman named Josphine Owino.
Khalusha lived in a small rented house near the Kware dump, a garbage-filled abandoned quarry where some victims’ remains were found. He was allegedly trying to lure another woman, identified only as Susan, when arrested.
The police also arrested a second suspect found with one of the victim’s phones. During the news conference, they showed items found with Khalusha, including 10 cell phones, 24 SIM cards, ID cards, gloves, nylon sacks, ropes, and a machete believed to have been used to dismember some victims.
Last week, police started finding mutilated remains of women aged 18 to 30 near the Kware dump, leading to speculation about a possible cult or serial killer in the area. At the same time, a cult leader went on trial for the deaths of over 400 followers in an unrelated case.
Owino’s sister said Owino disappeared on June 26 from Nairobi’s Mukuru slums and her body was among those found at the dump. Police plan to conduct autopsies on the nine bodies recovered so far and have added more officers to continue searching the area.
