Lake-effect snow warnings are in effect until Tuesday night in parts of Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. Michigan also has winter storm warnings, especially along the Lake Michigan coast, where snowfall could reach up to a foot.
Some inland areas are experiencing even heavier snow, leading to school cancellations in places like Gaylord, Michigan. Since Thanksgiving, Gaylord has received over three feet of snow.
In southwest Michigan, a crash involving 14 cars and three semi-trucks critically injured one driver and caused a temporary shutdown of Interstate 94 near Hartford.
The crash happened during heavy snow and whiteout conditions, with officials blaming the crash on drivers going too fast for the weather. There were also many vehicle slide-offs, and authorities are advising drivers to slow down and be careful on icy roads.
The snowstorm is affecting residents, who are dealing with more snow after days of clearing. Areas of western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio have already seen over a foot of snow in the past few days. The National Weather Service reported that more than five feet of snow have accumulated east of Lake Ontario.
Snow is expected to continue through Tuesday, adding to the challenges faced by communities, especially south of Buffalo.
