A man was arrested near the Republican National Convention security area on Monday for carrying a gun in a “tactical” backpack, according to the police.
The arrest happened around 1 p.m. on North 11th Street in Milwaukee. Police found that the 21-year-old man did not have a permit to carry the hidden gun.
The arrest took place about two blocks away from the convention’s vehicle screening area, which started on Monday.
Law enforcement noticed the man because he looked suspicious, wearing a ski mask and carrying a large tactical backpack.
U.S. Capitol Police stopped the man, with help from Milwaukee police. Capitol Police did not provide specific details about the arrest and directed questions to Milwaukee authorities. A spokesperson for the Milwaukee district attorney also referred questions to the police.
The police did not answer a question about the type of gun involved, saying the investigation is still ongoing.
The case is being reviewed by local prosecutors.
This arrest happened two days after former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where he said his ear was shot.
On Tuesday, police from Columbus, Ohio, who were in Milwaukee to help with convention security, shot a man holding two knives. He was moving toward another man he was arguing with, and this happened about a mile from the convention venues.
