Marcus Lewis vs. Jonathan Jackson: A Battle Over Immigration Policy in Illinois

In the Illinois First Congressional District, the ongoing migrant crisis has emerged as a pivotal issue in the campaign between Republican Marcus Lewis and Democratic incumbent Congressman Jonathan Jackson.

Lewis criticized the support provided to migrants, stating that the financial aid, such as $9,700 for rent and $2,000 monthly in Social Security benefits, is insulting to the constituents of the district.

In response, Jackson attributed the influx of migrants to the economic sanctions imposed by previous Republican administrations, which he claims have driven millions from Venezuela to seek refuge in the U.S.

He emphasized that the Biden-Harris Administration has implemented measures to reduce border crossings, pointing to a reported decline to the lowest levels since mid-2020.

Lewis, a former Democrat, is urging voters to shift their political allegiance, declaring, Vote red. Vote red. There’s another party out here, as he aims to become the first Republican to represent the district since 1935.

He positions his party as a champion for working-class families, contrasting their values with those he associates with Democrats.

The discourse highlights the broader national conversation surrounding immigration policy and local economic impacts, as both candidates strive to connect with voters on these critical issues.
