A Mississippi driver was arrested in Texas for human smuggling after authorities found 17 illegal immigrants hidden inside a truck.
The arrest was announced on Thursday by Lt. Chris Olivarez from the Texas Department of Public Safety, who shared the news on social media. The driver was caught in Kinney County, driving a fake Lowe’s work truck, a common trick to avoid getting caught.
According to Lt. Olivarez, the 17 immigrants—13 men and 4 women—were found in a hidden compartment in the truck. Some of them were severely dehydrated and had numb legs from being crammed into a space only three feet wide. They were sweating heavily and needed medical attention, which they received.
The driver, whose name hasn’t been released, is charged with human smuggling causing serious bodily injury. The investigation is still ongoing.
