The Metropolitan Transportation Authority MTA is taking significant strides toward modernization with the introduction of state-of-the-art SC42-DM locomotives for Metro-North Railroad. Unveiled in Croton-on-Hudson, these powerful 4,200-horsepower locomotives promise to enhance train reliability while drastically reducing air pollutants.
Set to begin passenger service in early 2025, the SC42-DM locomotives will lower emissions by over 85% compared to the older P32 models.
This upgrade is a major advancement as the new locomotives are designed to operate on electric power across Metro-North’s 102-mile third rail territory, significantly extending the electric range compared to the current fleet. Enhanced diagnostic systems will also contribute to smoother and more reliable operations.
Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi stated, This is about delivering the best customer experience every day, highlighting the environmental benefits of the new locomotives.
New York State Senator Pete Harckham emphasized the importance of this initiative for improving air quality, while Assembly Member Dana Levenberg referred to it as good news for cleaner air and more dependable service.
This upgrade is part of a $414 million contract with Siemens Mobility, marking a crucial step toward a more sustainable transit future for the region.
