Nearly 10,000 nurses from Corewell Health in Southeast Michigan have voted to join the Teamsters union after a year-long campaign. Around 9,600 registered nurses finalized their decision on November 15.
The Michigan Teamsters Joint Council 43 called this a victory, emphasizing that the move will ensure fair compensation and recognition for the nurses.
Teamsters leaders pointed out that Corewell Health’s nearly billion-dollar annual profit is largely due to nurses working excessive overtime and managing high nurse-to-patient ratios.
Despite Corewell’s aggressive union-busting efforts, Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien praised the nurses for recognizing their worth and choosing the Teamsters as their path to a stronger union contract.
Corewell Health responded by stating that the vote results are still being reviewed and certified, reaffirming their commitment to working with nurses to provide high-quality care.
