New Hampshire Investigates Surge in Political Sign Theft and Vandalism

The New Hampshire Department of Justice’s Election Law Unit is investigating a rise in complaints regarding the theft and vandalism of political signs throughout the state.

Under New Hampshire law RSA 664:17, it is illegal for unauthorized individuals to remove, deface, or destroy political signs, and violations may lead to fines of up to $250 per sign, with a maximum of $2,000, or potentially misdemeanor charges.

Local law enforcement agencies, such as the Moultonborough Police Department, have shared videos of specific incidents, including the theft of a Harris-Walz sign.

The Amherst Police Department has also engaged the community by posting photos of recovered signs and asking residents if they recognize them.

Residents who experience theft of their political signs are encouraged to report the incidents to both their local police department and the Election Law Unit.

The Election Law Unit is actively investigating these complaints and may pursue enforcement actions as needed.
