Ohio Sheriffs’ Power Sparks Concern: Portage County Sheriff Criticized at Kent Roundtable

The roundtable discussion held at Kent United Church of Christ highlighted significant concerns regarding the unchecked power of Ohio sheriffs, particularly focusing on Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski.

Local residents, including Delena War, expressed frustration over the lack of accountability for sheriffs, likening their authority to that of the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood.

Despite inflammatory social media posts by Zuchowski, including one suggesting residents write down the addresses of neighbors with Kamala Harris signs and referring to undocumented migrants as locust, many felt that efforts to hold him accountable had been ineffective.

The event, organized by the Portage County NAACP, ACLU of Ohio, the League of Women Voters of Kent, and other advocacy groups, aimed to educate voters on the sheriff’s role and avenues for accountability.

However, many attendees voiced concerns about the broader implications for local and national democracy, especially in the context of unchecked authority.

One major concern was the potential for voter intimidation and the lack of consequences for Zuchowski’s actions.

The Department of Justice DOJ has since announced that it will monitor elections in Portage County and Cleveland to ensure federal laws are upheld, though the specifics of the DOJ’s involvement remain unclear.

For attendees like Arie Goodman, these issues are reflective of broader concerns about civil liberties and unchecked political power.
