Peoria, IL – America’s Gold Star Families AGSF, an organization dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of fallen soldiers, held its 10th annual commemoration at the Peoria Riverfront this past weekend.
The event brought together families who have lost loved ones during active military service, providing them a space to remember, connect, and heal.
Darin Funk, president of the AGSF board of directors, expressed the importance of the gathering. “It’s just basically for families to enjoy each other, he said. This year, we decided to have it down here at Peoria Riverfront for the second half of our program. Families have time to talk to each other and heal.”
The commemoration serves as both a solemn remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and a celebration of life and resilience. Patti Latch, executive director of AGSF, emphasized the dual purpose of the event.
Our lives go on, and our heroes would want us to be productive, not live grieving all the time, but to find purpose yet again, she remarked.
During the event, each family received thoughtful gifts as a token of appreciation for their sacrifice. Generous donations from the Peoria community included books, quilts, and shoes, ensuring that each family left with cherished mementos.
Attendees also enjoyed complimentary admission to the local museum, further fostering a sense of community and support.
The commemoration was made possible through the generous donations to America’s Gold Star Families, highlighting the community’s commitment to honoring those who have served and sacrificed for their country.
As families gathered to share stories and support one another, the event underscored the importance of community in the healing process for those who bear the weight of loss.
