Rep. Byron Donalds R-FL is urging President Joe Biden to take action to prevent a potential strike along U.S. ports from Texas to Maine, which could have severe economic consequences.
The International Longshoremen’s Association, representing workers at numerous docks, is prepared to strike on October 1 if a new labor contract isn’t reached by then.
Donalds criticized the Biden administration for its inaction, suggesting that a strike could cost the economy $5 billion daily and lead to higher prices for consumers
He emphasized the need for presidential intervention under the Taft-Hartley Act, which would impose an 80-day cooling-off period to allow negotiations to continue without a work stoppage.
Donalds also pointed to California’s environmental regulations as a complicating factor.
