Aidan Carey, a recent graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, has been appointed as the new executive director of the Rhode Island Republican Party.
Carey’s hiring follows the resignation of the GOP’s former leader, Jesus Solorio, four months ago. For much of its history, the Rhode Island Republican Party has operated as a volunteer-led organization under Chairman Joe Powers.
Powers praised Carey’s accomplishments, noting his role as the chair of the Lincoln Republican Town Committee and his work on various state party committees focused on messaging, budget, and by-laws. Powers described Carey as a “breath of fresh air” and expressed confidence in his ability to help grow the party in his new role.
State Republicans have pointed to a lack of resources, including full-time staff, as a reason for the shortage of candidates in state and federal races. Meanwhile, the Rhode Island Democratic Party also remains without an executive director after Emily Howe stepped down in March.
Carey, who graduated from LaSalle Academy in 2020 and earned his degree in philosophy and political science at Holy Cross, also writes a monthly column for The Valley Breeze. He did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.
