Sean Burroughs, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist, Dies from Fentanyl Overdose

Former Major League Baseball player Sean Burroughs died from fentanyl intoxication in May at a baseball field in Long Beach, California, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner. The death has been ruled an accident.

Burroughs, who was 43 years old, was found unconscious by his car at Stearns Champions Park after dropping off his son for a Little League game.

CPR was performed, but he could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene.

He was a two-time Little League World Series champion and won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics. Burroughs was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1998 and made his major league debut in 2002.

He recorded the first walk-off hit in Petco Park history in 2004 but was out of baseball by 2007, returning to play from 2011 to 2012.

In a 2011 interview, Burroughs mentioned his past struggles with substance abuse but expressed a desire to change his life.

He also played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Minnesota Twins during his career, which included 528 games.
