CHICAGO CBS — Vice President Kamala Harris’s acceptance of the Democratic nomination at the Democratic National Convention has energized her party members from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Delegates from the Philadelphia area told CBS News Philadelphia that Harris gives them hope for winning the 2024 presidential election against former President Donald Trump.
I find it exciting and thrilling because it’s a woman, said Janet Diaz Temin, a Democratic city councilmember in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She’s a woman of color, like me.
The historical impact was also noted by 95-year-old Angie Gialloreto, a Pennsylvania delegate and the oldest delegate at the convention. Gialloreto, who has attended every DNC since 1976, said Harris’s nomination means so much and encouraged young people, saying, This is your time.
Elected officials are eager to campaign for Harris. Joe Biden has given us an opportunity to start over again, said Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, who feels optimistic and energized.
Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey praised Harris, saying, This is the best I’ve ever seen her. She is like Jordan in a playoff game right now.
In battleground Pennsylvania, Democratic officials are ready to work hard. “She has put this within the margin of effort, said Pennsylvania state Sen. Sharif Street, emphasizing that effort can lead to victory.
Trump Campaigns on Border Security
As the convention wrapped up, Trump visited the southern border in Arizona for an event titled “Make America Safe Again.” He highlighted cases involving immigrants to criticize the Biden administration’s policies, though some studies suggest people living in the U.S. illegally are less likely to commit crimes compared to native-born Americans.
Trump’s campaign continues to focus on border security. The Senate recently blocked a bipartisan border security bill after Trump opposed it.
Democrats at the convention positioned their party as offering effective leadership on border issues. Trump was also set to speak in Las Vegas about his no tax on tips proposal.
