Shelley Duvall, known for her role in “The Shining” and her work with director Robert Altman, has passed away at 75, as confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy.
While the cause of death hasn’t been disclosed, Gilroy mentioned that Duvall experienced a lot of suffering in her final year and that she is now “free to fly away.”
Duvall started her acting career in the 1970 film “Brewster McCloud,” directed by Altman. She worked with him on several other movies, including “Thieves Like Us” and “Nashville,” winning the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977 for “3 Women.”
In 1980, she starred with Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” based on a Stephen King book. That same year, she appeared with Robin Williams in Altman’s “Popeye.” Duvall continued acting in the ’80s and ’90s before retiring in 2002.
In 2016, she was featured on “Dr. Phil,” discussing her struggles with mental illness. This appearance faced criticism for being exploitative, with Kubrick’s daughter calling it “appallingly cruel.”
Duvall’s last film role was in the 2023 horror movie “The Forest Hills.” She began her relationship with Gilroy in 1989 after they worked together on a Disney Channel project. They lived in Blanco, Texas, and did not have children.
