Survey Finds Growing Frustration as More Stores Lock Up Everyday Items

A recent survey by Numerator shows that many shoppers are frustrated with retailers locking up products to prevent theft.

More than 27% of shoppers said they would either switch stores or leave without buying anything when they encounter locked items.

Since early 2022, stores in various industries, from groceries to electronics, have started locking up items behind glass or freezer cases because of rising theft. Everyday items like deodorant, toothpaste, and shampoo are now often behind locks.

The September survey found that 61% of shoppers noticed more locked items in stores over the past year. The most common items include personal electronics 58%, medications 38%, and hygiene products 34%.

Shoppers aren’t happy about waiting for assistance either—17% say they’ll leave the store and 10% will abandon their purchase. They’re especially impatient when it comes to everyday items like cosmetics and bath products.
