Victims of Hurricane Debby have been granted tax relief, with extended deadlines now pushed to February 3, 2025.
The IRS announced that taxpayers in parts of South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia have more time to file federal individual and business tax returns and make payments. This extension covers deadlines that were originally set between August 1 and February 3.
The new deadline applies to those with a valid extension for their 2023 federal tax return. However, payments that were due before Hurricane Debby are not included in this extension.
Quarterly estimated income tax payments due on September 16, 2023, and January 15, 2024, as well as payroll and excise tax returns due on October 31, 2023, and January 31, 2024, are also covered by the extension.
In Florida, penalties for missing payroll and excise tax deposits due between August 1 and August 16, 2023, will be waived if the deposits are made by August 16. Similar relief applies in South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina with slight differences in the dates.
To qualify for the postponed deadline, individuals and businesses must be in areas designated by FEMA. These areas include all 46 counties in South Carolina, 61 counties in Florida, 55 counties in Georgia, and 66 counties in North Carolina.
If you are in these areas and meet the eligibility criteria, the IRS will automatically apply this relief. There’s no need to contact the IRS, but ensure your address on file is correct. If you believe you qualify for relief but live outside the designated areas, you can contact the IRS at 866-562-5227.
