Thanksgiving Travel Surge Expected in North Carolina: 2.2 Million to Hit the Roads

RALEIGH, N.C. WNCN — More than 2 million people in North Carolina are expected to travel for Thanksgiving, with Sunday being the busiest day for returning traffic.

AAA Carolinas estimates 2.2 million North Carolinians will travel, with 2 million of them driving more than 50 miles. This is a slight increase from last year.

Since many people work on Monday, Sunday is the busiest travel day. Traffic is expected to be heaviest between noon and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

In North Carolina, around 270 mountain roads are still closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene.

There were several accidents reported on Sunday, with the worst one happening on Interstate 95 south in Cumberland County. A crash around 2:35 p.m. closed two lanes on the southbound side of a newly opened stretch of road.

There was also traffic congestion on I-85 at the Durham-Orange county line, and earlier in the afternoon, a wreck in Harnett County caused lane closures on the northbound side.
