WORCESTER, MA – The Massachusetts State Police held its graduation ceremony on Wednesday, paying tribute to recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who tragically died during a training exercise.
The 25-year-old succumbed to a medical crisis on September 13, a day after becoming unresponsive during a defensive tactics exercise at the academy.
Delgado-Garcia’s death has sparked calls for accountability and a thorough investigation, with family members and advocates questioning the nature of the training exercise.
During a protest outside the DCU Center, his mother and supporters expressed their grief and desire for justice. We are looking for justice, answers, said Jennifer Verges, holding a banner in memory of Delgado-Garcia.
Despite the ongoing investigation, the graduation ceremony continued, featuring a moment of silence and a video tribute to Delgado-Garcia. Massachusetts officials, including Gov. Maura Healey, extended condolences to his family, acknowledging the weight of the occasion.
Trooper Enrique Delgado-Garcia answered the call we continue to grieve with you, Healey stated.
Delgado-Garcia, originally from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, had a background in victim advocacy before pursuing his dream of becoming a state trooper.
Following his death, Massachusetts State Police suspended full-contact boxing training for recruits.
