Walmart Recalls Apple Juice After FDA Finds Unsafe Arsenic Levels

Bentonville, Ark. KNWA/KFTA — Walmart is recalling nearly 10,000 cases of its Great Value brand apple juice because they may contain harmful levels of arsenic, according to the Food and Drug Administration FDA.

The recall affects six-packs of 8-ounce bottles of apple juice. The recall started on August 15, and the FDA has now classified it as a Class II recall, which means the product might cause temporary health issues that are not likely to be serious.

The recalled juices have the UPC code 0-78742-29655-5 and a “best if used by” date of December 28, 2024. They were sold at Walmart stores in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and others.

The FDA found that the juice had arsenic levels of 13.2 parts per billion, while the FDA’s guidance says apple juice should not have more than 10 parts per billion.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring mineral that can be harmful to humans. The risk depends on the amount in the food, how often it’s consumed, and the age of the person consuming it. Even low levels of arsenic can cause symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, numbness, and muscle cramps.

The FDA noted that the arsenic levels in the recalled apple juice are not high enough to cause serious health problems.
