The holiday season brings more parties, family get-togethers, and time spent indoors due to the cold weather. While these gatherings bring joy, they also create the perfect conditions for spreading viruses.
Dr. Katherine Cox-Flaherty, a lung specialist with Inova in Virginia, explained that this time of year usually sees a rise in respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID-19, RSV, and walking pneumonia.
“We’re seeing all the common winter viruses increasing,” she said, adding that the peak is still ahead as winter continues. However, the current rise in cases is typical for this time of year.
Certain groups are more at risk, such as people with chronic health issues, weakened immune systems, or heart and lung problems. While viruses can infect anyone, these individuals are more likely to get seriously ill.
To stay healthy during the winter, Dr. Cox-Flaherty emphasized simple but important steps:
- Wash your hands regularly – Hand hygiene is key to stopping the spread of viruses.
- Avoid touching your face and eyes – This helps prevent bacteria and viruses from infecting you.
- Stay away from sick people – If you’re sick, be honest with those around you, especially if they have weakened immune systems.
She also highlighted the importance of vaccines. There are vaccines for the flu, COVID-19, and RSV. The RSV vaccine is available for people aged 75 and older, or for those over 60 with health conditions.
By taking these precautions, you can reduce the chances of getting sick during the holiday season.
