Yellowstone Park Shooting Leaves One Dead, Ranger Hospitalized

One person died and a park ranger was injured in a shooting on Thursday morning at Yellowstone National Park in Canyon Village, Wyoming, according to park officials.

The incident began overnight and concluded in the morning. Yellowstone National Park stated that rangers responded to reports of an armed individual making threats at Canyon Village, located south of Tower Falls in the park’s central area.

Rangers engaged with the individual and gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the individual’s death. The person’s identity has not been disclosed.

A Yellowstone law enforcement park ranger was injured during the incident and was in stable condition at a hospital, though their name was not released.

The FBI is leading the investigation with assistance from National Park Service special agents. As part of the investigation, an area around the Canyon Lodge complex remained closed.

Park officials assured the public that there are no ongoing threats, and no further details were provided.

Todd Heskett, who was staying at Canyon Village with his family, recounted hearing gunshots from the Canyon Lodge eatery around 8 a.m. He immediately called 911 and the front desk and was instructed to stay in his room. The eatery, visitor center, and general store were closed as a precaution.

Approximately an hour later, Heskett received an emergency alert confirming that the situation was under control and it was safe to leave.
